I was wondering if you might be able to build a custom version to auto-create Squash scoresheets? Can we generate a Round Robin bracket where players change teams for each match? In other words, the bracket would not reflect the same team, but individual players matched up for each match and each player gets their own points from each match to accumulate and determine the medal winners. Is there anyway to make the schedule longer than just a double round robin?

I use it for my middle school class and end up making schedules and then have to add the ranking tables up on my own.A round-robin tournament or all-play-all tournament is a competition in which each contestant meets all other contestants in turn.

The term round-robin is derived from the French term rubanmeaning " ribbon ". Over a long period of time, the term was corrupted and idiomized to robin. In a single round-robin schedule, each participant plays every other participant once. If each participant plays all others twice, this is frequently called a double round-robin. The term is rarely used when all participants play one another more than twice, [1] and is never used when one participant plays others an unequal number of times as is the case in almost all of the major United States professional sports leagues — see AFL —41 and All-America Football Conference for exceptions.

In the United Kingdom, a round-robin tournament is often called an American tournament in sports such as tennis or billiards which usually have knockout tournaments. A round-robin tournament with four players is sometimes called "quad" or "foursome". In sports with a large number of competitive matches per season, double round-robins are common.

Most association football leagues in the world are organized on a double round-robin basis, in which every team plays all others in its league once at home and once away. This system is also used in qualification for major tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and the continental tournaments e.

There are also round-robin bridgechessdraughtsgocurling and Scrabble tournaments. The World Chess Championship decided in and in on an eight-player double round-robin tournament where each player faces every other player once as white and once as black. Group tournaments rankings usually go by number of matches won and drawn, with any of a variety of tiebreaker criteria. Frequently, pool stages within a wider tournament are conducted on a round-robin basis.

In theory, a round-robin tournament is the fairest way to determine the champion from among a known and fixed number of contestants. Each contestant, whether player or team, has equal chances against all other opponents because there is no prior seeding of contestants that will preclude a match between any given pair.

The element of luck is seen to be reduced as compared to a knockout system since one or two bad performances need not ruin a competitor's chance of ultimate victory.

Final records of participants are more accurate, in the sense that they represent the results over a longer period against the same opposition. The system is also better for ranking all participants, not just determining the winner. This is helpful to determine the final rank of all competitors, from strongest to weakest, for purposes of qualification for another stage or competition as well as for prize money.

In team sport the round-robin major league champions are generally regarded as the "best" team in the land, rather than the elimination cup winners. Moreover, in tournaments such as the FIFA or ICC world cups, a first round stage consisting of a number of mini round robins between groups of 4 teams guards against the possibility of a team travelling possibly thousands of miles only to be eliminated after just one poor performance in a straight knockout system.

The top one, two, or occasionally three teams in these groups then proceed to a straight knockout stage for the remainder of the tournament. In the circle of death see belowit is possible that no champion emerges from a round-robin tournament, even if there is no draw. However, most sports have tie-breaker systems which resolve this.

Round-robins can suffer from being too long compared to other tournament types, and with later scheduled games potentially not having any substantial meaning. They may also require tiebreaking procedures. Swiss system tournaments attempt to combine elements of the round-robin and elimination formats, to provide a worthy champion using fewer rounds than a round-robin, while allowing draws and losses.

The main disadvantage of a round robin tournament is the time needed to complete it. Unlike a knockout tournament where half of the participants are eliminated after each round, a round robin requires one round less than the number of participants multiplied by half the number of participants if the number of participants is even, and as many rounds as participants if the number of participants is odd.

For instance, a tournament of 16 teams can be completed in just 4 rounds i. Other issues stem from the difference between the theoretical fairness of the round robin format and practice in a real event. Since the victor is gradually arrived at through multiple rounds of play, teams who perform poorly, who might have been quickly eliminated from title contention, are forced to play out their remaining games. Thus games are played late in the competition between competitors with no remaining chance of success.Curling - 10 teams playing on 4 sheets for 7 weeks on: October 03,PM.

I can find lots of schedules for 10 teams on 5 sheets but we only have 4 sheets. Therefore two teams will be on bye each week. I need to have the games balanced across the sheets so that one team doesn't play most of their games on the same sheet. Any help greatly appreciated. Therefore 12 weeks are necessary and so there must be 3 occasions when a sheet is left empty; above these are in rounds 1, 5 and 9, but let me know if you would like some other arrangement.

Teams should play either 2 or 3 times on each sheet. I suppose saying "round robin" is in error since we are only doing 7 weeks. The teams will not play all 9 of the competition. We do need to have four games playing each time with four teams on bye. Working on a solution I will put teams 1 and 2 on bye the first week; teams 3 and 4 the second week and so on.

Then just a matter of putting the remaining teams on alternate ices etc. Thanks you so much! Forgot your password?Help for 10 teams, and 10 games on: December 08,PM. Hi I am running a camp for 10 teams.

All the games on the two days are run concurrently. Teams are to visit each game station to challenge another team - ie 2 teams will be at 1 game station. Each game master will conduct each game a total of 5 times - at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm. It will be the same for day 2. Eg, Team 1 must play Game A, and can only play it once. Also, what about if I have 8 teams, and 4 game stations day 14 game stations day 2?

Or, 12 teams, and 6 game stations day 16 game stations day 2? Or, 14 teams, and 7 game stations day 17 game stations day 2? To make a round robin, only 45 rounds are needed. It does not matter which teams compete with same team twice.

There is a special form of balanced round-robin called a partitioned balanced tournament design which will meet your needs. Finally the matches in rounds 1 to 5 taken from any column contain all the teams exactly once. Given these properties it must also be the case that rounds 5 to 9 from any column also contain all the teams exactly once. So this gives you the schedule that you want: use rounds 1 to 5 for day 1, and then rounds 5 to 9 for day 2, as round 5 is used twice it might be a good idea to rearrange the order of play so that it is used at the start of day 1 and at the end of day 2 - that way the repeated matches are all as far apart as possible.

Below I have pasted similar scedule for 12 and 14 teams. Unfortunately no PBTD exists for 8 teams. Hope that helps. Hi Ian, Thks sooo much for your help. May I know if there is any formula to doing this scheduling? Or is it some computer program? I'm interested to find out how you did it!! Lexus, Thanks for your kind words. I have tried to find these type of schedules using a computer program, but with very little success, I can find the 10 team solution but none of the larger schedules.Elimination Brackets with consolation options supporting up to participants, Round Robins with different display options up to 16 competitors, Pool Play divisions up to competitors in 10 different groups, and Heats with up to competitors.

A double round robin tournament chart is a draw format that uses a round robin tournament bracket and repeats the matchups a second time. All participants play each other twice in the same order. The double round robin tournament chart is displayed by round meaning all the matches within each round are grouped together on the printed bracket.

This layout style is most commonly used for tournaments. Leagues and seasons more frequently use the Double round robin bracket format. A Double round robin tournament chart would frequently be used in a tournament, league, or season division with a small number of teams so their play can be extended throughout the event.

Advantages: The Double round robin tournament chart is ideal if you want to create extra matches for participants that are in small divisions and are expecting to play more.

Many times in age competition the older age groups will have a small number of competitors and this format creates more tournament competition. A team can have a few bad games and still end up placing high in the division. In sports where home field advantage is important, the double round robin tournament chart allows the same matchup to occur for both the home team and away team. Disadvantages: A lot of available time is needed for a double round robin tournament chart because every matchup is played twice.

Players that are beaten badly in the first matchup are forced to go up again against the stronger team again and will probably lose badly again. Teams losing multiple games in early rounds would be out of contention early with no reason to play later matches when players enter the second half of the double round robin tournament chart.

Bracket Formats The R2sports event management software supports multiple draw type formats Brackets that can be used for tournaments, leagues, and seasons include: Elimination Brackets with consolation options supporting up to participants, Round Robins with different display options up to 16 competitors, Pool Play divisions up to competitors in 10 different groups, and Heats with up to competitors. The first step is to get the number of teams to a power of two: 2, 4, 8, 16, With 20 teams, you might select eight of those teams to have a preliminary round. The four winners would then join the other twelve to fill out the sixteen-team field.

If you have 24 teams, you could have everyone compete in a preliminary round; this would leave 12 teams. Then, 4 of those teams randomly selected could get a bye and the other 8 teams would play to find the other 4 contestants for the next round. There is a systematic approach to scheduling a Round Robin tournament. The technique is called the polygon method.

UPA Manual of Tournament Formats

There will be N -1 rounds each team will play N-1 games. Since each team will play every other team once, no team will be idle during any of the rounds. Draw a regular N -1 sided polygon i.

Each vertex and the centre point represents one team. Draw horizontal stripes as shown below. Then, join the vertex that has been left out to the centre. Each segment represents teams playing each other in the first round. The new segments represent the pairings for round two.

There will be N rounds since each team will play every other team once, and will be idle for exactly one round. Let us work out the schedule for 7 teams, numbering the teams from 1 to 7. Draw a regular N-gon heptagon for 7 teams. Each vertex represents one team. The vertex that has been left out gives the idle team. One more rotation will bring the polygon back to its original position.

Therefore, the schedule could look like this:.
